Basics- To do or not to do?
I know long division is fading fast, but I feel my students need to know this concept to ensure success in future grade levels. I always struggle with whether to teach this skill or simply rely on a calculator. I know students should be able to do this skill when they get to fifth grade, but they cannot. I know my parents want their students to know how to do this without a calculator. What do you think?

We are working on finishing up our unit on rates, ratios and percents in our sixth grade math class. We are getting prepared to do a fun, hands-on activity involving finding the percent of a number. This is a huge secret! I know my students are dying to know what it will be. Let's just say it will be "sweet!"
